LJ5.

Launched 10.18.25 November 8 1960.

First flight of production capsule on a Little Joe Booster.
Little Joe 1B complete, impacted the Ocean after the escape motor fired without Capsule release. It was believed that deformation of the recovery bay just below the tower clamp-ring affected the electrical connections.

LJ5 was fitted with the retro pack, but the retro grade and posi-grade motors were dummies. The retro pack was supposed to release with capsule seperation. This was the first flight to use the triple nozzle jettison motor, as it was found that the single motor produced 39% nominal thrust, and the tri nozzle for the same motor produced 68%. Porthole window, and "McDonnell" tower. Secondary adapter used to accept production capsule. Marman band red apart from covers(black). No orange panels on booster body or transition. Three black "raceway" bands, and two black "raceways". LJ5 failed to achieve any of it's objectives, as the tower and capsule failed to seperate from the Little Joe, and the complete system impacted the sea.
